L'APÉRO

L’Apéro – 2022 | Various sizes, sand-cast glass

Video,narrative text,soda-lime glass

The aperitif, commonly known as “l’apéro”, takes on many forms. For some, it’s a small meal of bite-sized snacks shared among friends before the main course. For others, it’s an opportunity to gather—a simple way to host at home or in the park.

My vision of l’apéro is more of a state of mind. As soon as the weather starts to shift, quietly giving way to spring, it’s time for l’apéro. When summer approaches, I sometimes wake up already planning the afternoon’s apéro, even before inviting my friends.

Sometimes, l’apéro happens spontaneously, out of the blue. Friends arrive with bottles of wine and beer. Glasses slowly fill and empty, and for some, a cigarette dangles from their lips. Many aren’t even smokers, but l’apéro becomes an excuse to light one up. Gradually, everyone contributes something to the table. Stories, laughter, successes, and failures are shared among friends.

The spontaneity of this kind of apéro reminds me that it doesn’t take much to have a good time with the people I hold dear, despite our busy schedules. I created these pieces with that mindset. I always keep some nuts, olives, crackers, and a bit of cheese in the fridge—always ready for l’apéro.
