Slat Vessels [Beta Series] — 2023
Variable dimensions
Mouth-blown glass, sandblasted and kiln-polished finish — soda-lime glass
This series investigates the use of a mold constructed from wooden slats in the production of blown glass vessels. Made from reclaimed wood offcuts, the mold gradually evolves through repeated use. As it wears down, it subtly alters the geometry of the forms, introducing variations across the series.
Rather than producing identical objects, the mold generates a family of related vessels. Each piece shares a common structure while remaining individually distinct through the progressive transformation of the tool itself.
Surface treatment plays an important role in the work. High-pressure sandblasting creates a matte surface that is subsequently softened through kiln polishing, producing a satin-like finish with a tactile, leather-like quality. The balance between temperature and firing time directly influences both the stability of the forms and the character of the surface.
An interest in economy of means also informs the process. The mold is fabricated from reclaimed wood and the surface treatment is achieved without chemical additives, exploring how simple processes and limited resources can produce nuanced formal results.
