Untitled (TERRA 01) – 2023 | 45 cm x 60 cm – mixed media, recycled cardboard, newspaper, Quebec faience, fine art paper print
This performative work is part of my ongoing research into the interactions between glass and ceramics, two materials that are both contrasting and deeply complementary. This project emerged from my experiments to develop an effective method for integrating clay onto a hot glass surface, a technique I later refined and applied to hand-blown glass vases. These initial experiments opened new avenues of inquiry into the narrative and aesthetic potential of these materials when used in unconventional ways.
The idea of repurposing glass as a tool, rather than simply as a medium, marked a turning point in my creative process. I sought to deepen this dialogue between materials by exploring how clay, glass, and fire interact to produce unexpected visual and tactile effects. For this work, I applied faience by hand directly onto a canvas, seeking a more direct and spontaneous connection with the material. Heated and manipulated glass was then used to intervene on the composition, transforming each interaction into a unique moment where the materials mutually shape and transform one another.
The result is a work where layers of newspaper impregnated with wet and dry faience, burn marks, and the imprints of the glass form combine to create a rich and complex texture. The interaction between these materials transcends their original functions, questioning their narrative and sculptural potential.
Due to the ephemeral nature of this work, it was documented photographically upon completion. This image, printed on fine art paper, captures the essence of the project while ensuring its preservation. Every detail of this piece reflects an experimental approach, exploring the limits and possibilities of glass and ceramics in a creative dialogue.
